David Montgomery is a Casual Academic and Instrument Teacher - Percussion at the School of Music, The University of Queensland. He serves as Principal Percussionist of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (since 1994) and a member of the Australian World Orchestra (since 2011). His career spans performance, composition, and education.
As a composer, he has been commissioned by institutions including Opera Queensland and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Notable works include Fergal Onions (2017), based on John Harrison’s children’s story. He is Artistic Director of Isorhythmos percussion ensemble and editor of Isorhythmos Publications.
Montgomery focuses on percussion pedagogy, having developed a percussion syllabus for the Australian Music Examinations Board (2013). He has taught at the Queensland Conservatorium (1998–2012) and guest-lectured at the Australian National Academy of Music. His education projects include a percussion-based initiative engaging 350 students in regional Queensland (2018).
Award recognition includes a 2014 APRA Art Music Awards finalist placement for his syllabus work. He combines performance, composition, and education to advance percussion teaching from beginner to professional levels.
