Dr David McLernon is a Senior Research Fellow in the Biostatistics and Health Data Science group at the Institute of Applied Health Sciences, University of Aberdeen, with over 17 years of continuous service (6 years as Senior Research Fellow, 11 years as Research Fellow). His work centers on clinical prediction modeling, particularly in reproductive medicine and IVF outcome prediction, where he developed the OPIS models and collaborated on the SART IVF predictor used by ~8,000 people monthly.
His educational background includes a PhD in Primary Care/Medical Statistics from the University of Dundee (2008), an MPhil in Medical Statistics from Queen's University Belfast (2002), and a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the same institution (1999). He serves as the REF Impact Lead for the Institute of Applied Health Sciences (2024–present) and previously held the interim Research Lead role (2024).
McLernon's research focuses on dynamic prediction modeling using survival analysis techniques, with applications spanning reproductive medicine (IVF success prediction), neurology (Parkinson's disease prognosis), and stroke care. His work with STRATOS Topic Group 6 establishes international methodological standards for prediction model validation. Key projects include the OPIS prediction tools for infertility counseling and external validation of IVF models using UK and US datasets.
Recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on cross-disciplinary applications: 60% in reproductive medicine (IVF prediction tools), 30% in neurology (Parkinson's disease modeling), and 10% in stroke rehabilitation. His work consistently integrates advanced statistical methods like landmarking and accelerated failure time models to address clinical decision-making challenges.
He actively supervises PhD students across medical statistics and reproductive health and teaches medical statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Leadership roles include membership in Senatus Academicus, IAHS Equality Diversity and Integrity committee, and REF output assessment panel.
- Principal Investigator for Merck Medical Innovation Program (2024-2025)
- Co-Investigator on NIHR Research for Patient Benefit grant (2025)
- Associate Editor for Human Reproduction Open (2020-2024)
- Statistician on NIHR-funded study at University of Oxford
McLernon maintains significant external collaborations including STRATOS initiative membership, Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology partnership, and advisory roles for Wellbeing of Women charity. His leadership extends to organizing the IAHS Seminar series and chairing the inaugural SMMSN Impact Symposium (Jan 2025).
