David McClain is a Professor and President Emeritus at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, serving as the Faculty Director of UH Manoa Study Abroad. He previously held leadership roles including President of the University of Hawai‘i System (2004–2009), Dean of the Shidler College of Business (2000–2003), and Vice President for Academic Affairs (2003–2004). His academic background includes a PhD in Economics from MIT (1974) and a BA in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Kansas (1968).

His research interests span international economics, leadership, and management, with a focus on Asia-Pacific regional issues. He authored Apocalypse on Wall Street and published in journals like the Review of Economics and Statistics and Sloan Management Review. McClain has also served as a senior economist on President Jimmy Carter’s Council of Economic Advisers, taught globally, and held advisory roles in corporate and nonprofit sectors.

His military service included a tour in Vietnam (1970–1971) as a First Lieutenant.
