David Massell

David Massell is a Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of History at the University of Vermont (UVM). He specializes in Canadian-American history, environmental history, and North American Indigenous studies, with a focus on resource development in the Canadian North and hydroelectric policy. His research explores the economic integration of North America, particularly the role of American capital in shaping Quebec's hydroelectric projects.

His research interests center on the historical interplay between hydroelectric development, political economies, and environmental impacts. He has published two major books: Amassing Power (2000) and Quebec Hydropolitics (2011), both critically acclaimed. Current work examines Quebec’s Bersimis, Manicouagan, and Outardes rivers’ hydroelectric histories.

Award-winning educator, Massell teaches courses on Canadian history, Canadian-American relations, and environmental history. He actively engages students through field trips to Canada, including annual visits to Ottawa via the Canadian Studies Program. Beyond academia, he is an avid wilderness canoeist.
