David Marshall is a Professor of Physical Oceanography at the University of Oxford and a Professorial Fellow at St Hugh's College, Oxford. Prior to this, he held academic positions at the University of Reading (2003-2007 as Professor, 2000-2003 as Reader, 1994-2000 as Lecturer) and was a Post-Doctoral Associate at MIT (1992-1994). His research spans physical oceanography, geophysical fluid dynamics, ocean modeling, and climate dynamics, utilizing analytical, computational, and observational approaches.
He has received numerous honors, including the Appleton Medal and Prize from the Institute of Physics (2014), the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2002), and multiple fellowships. Marshall has advised numerous PhD students, both current and graduated, and has participated in significant academic service roles.
- 2014: Appleton Medal and Prize, Institute of Physics
- 2010: Victor P. Starr Memorial Lecture, MIT
- 2002: Philip Leverhulme Prize
- 1989: P. A. Sheppard Prize in Atmospheric Physics
- 1989: Dora Belasco Prize in Meteorology
