Professor Thomas Peacock is a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He serves as Director of the Environmental Dynamics Laboratory (ENDLab) and holds an NSF Career Award in Physical Oceanography. His research spans deep-sea mining impact assessment, environmental fluid dynamics, physical oceanography, and stratified flows.
- B.Sc. in Physics, University of Manchester (1994)
- D. Phil. in Physics, University of Oxford (1998)
Research interests focus on deep-sea mining (sediment plumes, turbidity currents), environmental fluid dynamics (transport barriers, Lagrangian coherent structures), and ocean dynamics (internal waves, Arctic Ocean processes). Recent studies include sediment plume modeling for deep-sea mining and Arctic Ocean warming investigations.
Key article trends show expertise in deep-sea mining environmental impact, internal wave dynamics, and ocean transport processes. Publications address turbidity current modeling, Lagrangian coherent structures in coral reefs, and Arctic Ocean data acquisition technologies.
Scientific honors include:
- APS Fellow (2021)
- International Symposium on Stratified Flows Plenary Lecture (2022)
- APS Gallery of Fluid Motion Prize (2013)
- Gledden Fellowship (2012)
- NSF CAREER Award (2007)
Professor Peacock teaches courses like Fluid Dynamics (1.63) and Nonlinear Dynamics (2.050, 18.354). He leads the ENDLab, which develops cutting-edge monitoring programs and modeling tools for emerging ocean technologies, including marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) and deep-sea mining impact assessment.
