Dr. Michael Byrne is an Associate Professor and Reader in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on climate dynamics, extreme temperatures, land-climate interactions, and the water cycle. He leads the Climate Dynamics Lab, which uses theory, computational models, and Earth-system observations to understand climate change impacts on tropical regions and global circulation patterns. Byrne holds a PhD in Climate Physics from MIT and has held fellowships at institutions like the University of Oxford and ETH Zürich.
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow (2018–2022)
- Imperial College Research Fellow (2017–2018)
- Recipient of the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2024)
His work addresses critical questions such as the role of clouds and water vapor in monsoons, the dynamics of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, and the differing responses of continents and oceans to climate change. Byrne has published extensively in journals like Nature Geoscience and Geophysical Research Letters, and his research is funded by UKRI, NERC, and the Leverhulme Trust.
