David Malinowski holds a dual role as Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Language Development at San José State University (SJSU) and Faculty-in-Residence in University Housing Services. He concurrently serves as Language Technology and Research Specialist at Yale University's Center for Language Study. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Education (Language, Literacy, Society & Culture) from UC Berkeley (2011), an MA in TESOL from San Francisco State University (2001), and a BA in Asian Studies from UC Berkeley (1997). He was a Japanese Government Scholar at Kanazawa University (1996).
His research focuses on language teacher development, place-based language learning, and the application of technology in education. He co-edits volumes on linguistic landscape and pedagogy, and serves as Associate Editor for the journal Linguistic Landscape. His work explores multimodal communication, critical discourse studies, and the intersection of language policy with public space.
Recent publications highlight themes such as linguistic landscapes as sites of social justice, pandemic-era language communication, and the transformation of TESOL programs in digital environments. His pedagogical innovations emphasize transdisciplinary approaches and community engagement.
