David Malcolm Nicol is a Herman M. Dieckamp Endowed Chair and Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds multiple directorships, including Director of the Information Trust Institute, Director of Research at the Illinois Advanced Research Center at Singapore (Illinois ARCS), and Director of the Dieckamp Center for Reliable, Secure, and Trustworthy Systems within the Coordinated Science Lab. He is also affiliated with the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science and the Grainger College of Engineering.
His research focuses on cybersecurity, parallel and discrete event simulation, industrial control systems security, smart grid networks, and dependable systems. He has contributed to areas such as message authentication in control systems, vulnerability analysis, and efficient simulation techniques for highly reliable systems.
He has received the prestigious IEEE Fellow award in 2003 for his contributions to the field. His work spans collaborations in cybersecurity and infrastructure security, with notable publications in journals like Empirical Software Engineering and ACM Transactions on Cyber-Physical Systems.
David Nicol has actively participated in academic activities, including an oral presentation on Cyber Threats in the Age of COVID-19 in June 2020. His research is anchored in labs such as the Information Trust Institute and the Coordinated Science Lab, emphasizing practical solutions for secure and trustworthy systems.
