David M. Margolis is the Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine, with appointments in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Epidemiology. He serves as Director of the UNC HIV Cure Center and Co-Director of the UNC Center for AIDS Research, leading translational HIV studies focused on proviral latency and persistence. His work bridges molecular, virological, and immunological research to develop interventions for HIV eradication.

Dr. Margolis investigates the role of epigenetic factors in HIV latency, collaborating on multidisciplinary clinical trials. His lab pioneered the use of HDAC inhibitors like vorinostat to reverse latency and contributed to NIH-funded initiatives such as the Collaboratory of AIDS Researchers for Eradication (CARE).
His scientific awards include Fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, 2022), Member of the Association of American Physicians (AAP, 2019), and Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher (2019, 2020). He has mentored over 20 post-doctoral fellows, many of whom hold academic positions.
