David Lines is a Professor of Renaissance Philosophy and Intellectual History at the University of Warwick, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and the Italian Studies department. He directed the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance from 2018 to 2023 and has held fellowships in the USA, Italy, Netherlands, and Germany. He joined Warwick in 2006 after teaching at the University of Miami.
- Education: BA in History, English, Ancient Greek (Bryan College, 1987); MA in English (UNC-Chapel Hill, 1991); AM and PhD in History (Harvard University, 1997).
His research focuses on the legacy of Greek thought, particularly Aristotelian moral and natural philosophy, within European institutional contexts. He explores Italian universities (1350–1750), ethical-political debates, cultural polemics, and the history of libraries, notably Ulisse Aldrovandi’s collection. His work also examines curriculum evolution at the University of Bologna and vernacular Aristotelianism in Renaissance Italy.
The articles in his bibliography reflect expertise in Renaissance ethics, conflict dynamics, and the institutionalization of knowledge. Themes include curriculum reform, cultural polemics, and the adaptation of Aristotelianism in vernacular contexts.
- Scientific Awards: Fulbright Fellowship, Ezio Franceschini Fellowship, Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Villa I Tatti Fellowship, Fellow of the British Academy (elected 2025), Foreign Fellow of the Istituto Veneto (elected 2019).
Lines actively supervises PhD students and supports Feodor Lynen Fellowships. He has led major grants like the AHRC Standard Grant (VARI) and Leverhulme International Network on Renaissance conflict. He serves as Senior Editor for Warwick Studies in Renaissance Thought and Culture and contributes to editorial boards for journals and book series.
