Professor David Latchman is a leading UK academic and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of London. He previously served as Master of Birkbeck and Professor of Genetics for 16 years, following his leadership roles at University College London (UCL), including Dean of the Institute of Child Health and Chair of Human Genetics.
- First-class BA in Natural Sciences (Genetics) from Cambridge (1978)
- PhD (1981) and DSc (1994) from UCL
As a molecular biologist, his research focuses on genetics and molecular pathology, with significant contributions to cancer therapies through the founding of BioVex (sold to Amgen). His policy work includes advocating for lifelong learning and serving on the Department for Education's Lifelong Learning Entitlement Steering Group.
Scientific honors include:
- CBE in 2010 for services to Higher Education
He has extensive governance experience on boards such as CBI London Council and London First, and serves as Chairman/Trustee of the Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation.
