David Lafrenière is a full Professor in the Department of Physics at the Université de Montréal, affiliated with the Faculté des arts et des sciences. His research focuses on exoplanet detection, particularly using infrared imaging techniques to study planetary systems and their formation. He is known for co-discovering the first direct imaging of an exoplanetary system around HR 8799 in 2008, earning the Radio-Canada Scientist of the Year award. He directs the Centre de recherche en astrophysique du Québec (CRAQ) and leads projects like PESTO, exploring exoplanet atmospheres and planetary systems.
- Research Areas: Exoplanet characterization, brown dwarfs, stellar multiplicity, and instrumentation development.
- Affiliations: CRAQ, Observatoire du Mont Mégantic (OMM), and iREx (Institut de recherche sur les exoplanètes).
He teaches courses such as PHY-1234 (Numerical Physics), PHY-3051 (Modern Data Analysis), and supervises over 20 graduate students. Key awards include the Harvey B. Richer Gold Medal (2017) and the John-C.-Polanyi Prize (2010).
