Étienne Artigau is a Researcher at the Université de Montréal, affiliated with the Institute for Research on Exoplanets (iREx). He earned his PhD in astrophysics from Université de Montréal in 2006, focusing on brown dwarf research and instrumentation development. He spent three years at the Gemini South Observatory in Chile, contributing to the commissioning of the NICI camera for exoplanet studies. Since 2009, he has led instrumental projects such as the SPIRou spectropolarimeter and supported the NIRISS instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope. His research emphasizes detecting and characterizing massive exoplanets around young stars, particularly through large-separation orbits.
Key contributions include the CPAPIR infrared camera (widely used at Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic) and pioneering studies of brown dwarf atmospheres, including the first clear detection of photometric variability in T-type dwarfs. He co-supervised PhD students Frédérique Baron (2019) and Marie-Eve Naud (2016), both studying exoplanet detection methods. Artigau’s work integrates observational astronomy with advanced instrumentation, addressing topics like stellar activity suppression, exoplanet atmospheric spectroscopy, and magnetic field analysis in young stars. He actively participates in major facilities like NIRPS and the upcoming ANDES spectrograph for the Extremely Large Telescope.
His current projects span JWST transmission spectroscopy of temperate exoplanets (e.g., TRAPPIST-1, LHS 1140b), magnetic field studies of M dwarfs, and SPIRou’s legacy survey targeting planetary systems. Artigau’s expertise bridges observational techniques, instrument development, and exoplanetary science, with a focus on advancing detection methods for small planets and characterizing planetary atmospheres.
