David Kretz is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Chicago. He holds a B.A. in Humanities, the Arts, and Social Thought from Bard College Berlin (2016) and an M.A. in Philosophy from the École Normale Supérieure Paris (2018). His research explores the philosophy of history, hermeneutics, translation theory, and modern social thought. A central project reimagines historical agency through the lens of translation rather than poetic creation, engaging with broader questions of 'world' and 'modernity' in social theory.
He co-coordinates the Literature and Philosophy workshop (2020-21) and teaches courses on German language and modern social thought. Notable contributions include translations of Adorno’s seminars and critical analyses of Strauss, Rorty, and MacIntyre. His work frequently addresses tensions between liberal education, financialization, and democratic ideals, as seen in articles like *Liberal Education Under Financial Pressure* (2017).
Kretz’s publications span philosophy, political theory, and education, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections. His teaching includes *Metaphysics, Morbidity, & Modernity: Mann's The Magic Mountain* (TA, 2020) and introductory German language courses. He has organized events such as the US premiere of a documentary on Hans Blumenberg (2019).
