David Khang is a Sessional Faculty member at Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD), where he teaches while maintaining an active interdisciplinary art practice that uniquely bridges dentistry, critical theory, and visual performance. He has also taught at Goddard College MFA-IA Program in Vermont and served as artist-in-residence at SymbioticA Centre for Biological Art, University of Western Australia.
Dr. Khang's educational background spans multiple disciplines:
- BSc in Psychology from University of Toronto
- DDS (Dental degree) from University of Toronto
- BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design
- MFA from University of California, Irvine, where he was recipient of the UCI Chancellor's Fellowship
- Completion of UCI's Critical Theory Emphasis, studying with Jacques Derrida, David Joselit, Fred Moten, and Etienne Balibar
David Khang's research investigates complex relationships between human and non-human entities through visual, performance, and biological media. His work explores geopolitical histories, interspecies relations, language systems, performativity, and postcolonial theory. Notably, he bridges his dual expertise in dentistry and art to create projects like 'Amelogenesis Imperfecta' which examines the philosophical implications of growing enamel from stem cells, and 'Beautox Me' which explores the cultural implications of Botox injections through artistic intervention on actors' faces.
His artistic practice often takes the form of site-specific public performances that 'remix' historical events across cultural and linguistic boundaries, as seen in his 'Wrong Place' series performed internationally in locations including Nicosia (Cyprus), Santiago (Chile), Mexico City, and Montréal. Analysis of his recent artistic output reveals consistent engagement with themes of power, memory, and interspecies relations through performance art, video installations, and bio-art that blend critical theory with material practice.
David Khang has received notable recognition for his work:
- Franklin Furnace Performance Art Award (2007)
- UCI Chancellor's Fellowship during his MFA studies
- Representation of UCIrvine in the Distinguished Masters Thesis Competition
As an educator, Khang has advised students through his teaching positions. His interdisciplinary approach influences his pedagogical methods, encouraging students to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Beyond his academic work, Khang serves as president of the Board of Directors at grunt gallery in Vancouver, demonstrating his commitment to supporting the broader art community. His practice involves collaboration with other artists, performers, and theorists, creating interdisciplinary teams to realize complex projects that bridge scientific and artistic methodologies.
