David J. Bentrem is a Professor of Surgery (Surgical Oncology) and Medical Social Sciences (Outcome and Measurement Science) at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He holds the Harold L. and Margaret N. Method Research Professorship in Surgery. His research focuses on cancer biology, immunology, and patient-centered outcomes, particularly in colorectal cancer and surgical oncology. Bentrem has contributed to studies elucidating the role of beta-catenin signaling in T-cells during colon cancer progression and the impact of surgical practices on postoperative outcomes.
- Education: Completed MSCI training at Feinberg School of Medicine (GME’03).
His research interests include understanding tumor-immune interactions, inflammatory pathways in cancer, and improving clinical outcomes through evidence-based interventions. Collaborations with institutions like the University of Chicago and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center have furthered his work. Key grants include NIH awards (e.g., R21AI076720, R01CA160436) and funding from the American Cancer Society.
- Awards: Inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.
Bentrem’s expertise spans clinical practice, translational research, and academic leadership. His teams investigate both basic science mechanisms (e.g., T-cell dysregulation) and clinical applications (e.g., antibiotic protocols in surgery). He contributes to interdisciplinary efforts at the Institute for Public Health and Medicine’s Center for Patient-Centered Outcomes.
