Dr. David Hilton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Baylor University (since Fall 2019). He held prior faculty positions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he served as Associate Professor of Physics. Dr. Hilton completed his postdoctoral research at Los Alamos National Lab's Center for Integrated Nanotechnology and Rice University. His academic achievements include the 2010 NSF CAREER Award.
Education:
- Ph.D., Cornell University (2002)
- M.S., Cornell University (2001)
- M.S., University of Rochester (1999)
- B.S., University of Rochester (1997)
Research Focus:
Dr. Hilton's research program investigates insulator-to-metal phase transitions in transition metal oxides, ultrafast dynamics in high mobility 2DEGs (two-dimensional electron gases), and transition metal dichalcogenides. His primary experimental techniques include ultrafast laser systems, nonlinear optical methods, and high magnetic field spectroscopy, with key collaborations at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, FL.
Publication Trends:
His recent publications (2024, 2023) focus on terahertz spectroscopy of quantum materials like SrIrO3 and FeSe thin films, superradiant emission in 2DEG systems, and magnetic field effects on exciton coupling in 2D materials. Earlier work (2016-2019) established methods for coherent spectroscopy in high magnetic fields and explored biexcitons in monolayer materials.
Scientific Contributions:
- NSF CAREER Award (2010) for terahertz magnetospectroscopy research
- Development of high magnetic field terahertz time-domain spectrometers
- Key studies on VO2 phase transitions and GaAs quantum wells
