Dr. David Hayes is a Professor of Applied Linguistics at Brock University, where he has held faculty positions since 2006. He holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham. His research focuses on equity in second/foreign language education, particularly in South and Southeast Asia, addressing systemic educational challenges for marginalized populations. He has extensive international experience in teacher training and curriculum development projects across 15+ countries, including collaborations with the World Bank, British Council, and Asia Development Bank.
His teaching includes courses on curriculum design (LING 3P91), second language acquisition (LING/PSYC 3Q91), sociocultural issues in SLA (LING 4P10), and TESOL theory (LING 5P04). His service roles include serving as Graduate Program Director (2007–11, 2014–15) and representing Brock on Senate committees. He reviews for journals like TESOL Quarterly and Language Teaching Research, and advises the Canadian Journal of Applied Linguistics.
Dr. Hayes’ research emphasizes equitable language policies, teacher professional development, and post-conflict educational rebuilding. His work in Sri Lanka and Thailand examines language education’s role in fostering social harmony. Key themes in his publications include fallacies in primary English teaching policies, novice teacher induction in Korea, and the global-local dynamics in language teacher education. He has authored/edited over 20 books and 60+ peer-reviewed articles, with recent attention to early language learning frameworks and English education in Nepal and Vietnam.
