Hilal Ergül is an Assistant Professor of TESOL and Applied Linguistics at the University of Northern Iowa, affiliated with the Department of Languages & Literatures in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences. She coordinates the TESOL program and specializes in second language acquisition, pragmatics, and classroom dynamics. Her research focuses on teacher feedback mechanisms, nonverbal behavior (e.g., smiling), and humor pragmatics in language education.
Educationally, she holds a PhD in English (University of Northern Iowa), a master's in English Linguistics, and a bachelor's in English Language Teaching with a minor in Psychological Counseling. She has extensive teaching experience in Europe and the U.S. in EFL, ESL, and Turkish as a Foreign Language, alongside college-level writing and research courses.
Her recent publications (2023–2012) explore pragmatic dimensions of humor, nonverbal feedback efficacy, and cross-cultural language learning contexts. Her work bridges theoretical SLA frameworks with practical classroom applications, emphasizing teacher-student interaction dynamics.
