David H. Bradstreet, Ph.D. serves as Professor and Chair of the Astronomy and Physics Department at Eastern University's College of Health and Sciences, where he also directs the David H. Bradstreet Observatory and Julia Fowler Planetarium. With a teaching career spanning since 1976, Dr. Bradstreet has established himself as a leading figure in astronomy education and binary star research.
Dr. Bradstreet's research interests focus on binary star systems, where he has made significant contributions through both theoretical work and educational tool development. He is particularly known for creating the Binary Maker 3.0 software used by researchers worldwide to calculate binary star characteristics. His work bridges professional astronomy research with public education, developing innovative approaches to make complex astronomical concepts accessible to learners of all ages.
His publication record includes over 100 professional works, with notable contributions being the three-volume Spitz Fulldome Curriculum for planetariums and his book 'Star Struck: Seeing the Creator in the Wonders of our Cosmos' (2016). These works demonstrate his commitment to translating complex astronomical phenomena into engaging educational experiences.
- Asteroid 5826 Bradstreet named by the International Astronomical Union in honor of his achievements
Dr. Bradstreet has collaborated with major organizations including NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the International Astronomical Union. His educational leadership extends beyond the classroom to developing planetarium programming that has reached audiences from young children to adults since his freshman year at Eastern in 1972.
Under his direction, the David H. Bradstreet Observatory and Julia Fowler Planetarium serve as vital centers for both academic instruction and community outreach, providing hands-on astronomical experiences that complement his educational philosophy of experiential learning.
