David Griffiths

Professor David Griffiths is a leading academic in the field of Archaeology at the University of Oxford, affiliated with

• the School of Archaeology
• Kellogg College
• University of Highlands and Islands (Visiting Professor)

. His research spans Viking-Age and Medieval Archaeology, with a focus on landscape archaeology, coastal change, and community engagement. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and Scotland, and Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists, he has directed major projects including the Birsay-Skaill Landscape Archaeology Project (Orkney) and the Archeox Project (East Oxford).

His methodological expertise includes

• geophysical prospection
• excavation
• soil chemical mapping
• lipid biomarker analysis

. He has supervised over 12 D.Phil students and teaches part-time postgraduate courses like the MSc in Applied Landscape Archaeology.

Notable awards include the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Public Engagement with Research (2016), and British Academy/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship (2014-15). His publications include Vikings of the Irish Sea and Beside the Ocean, with ongoing work on the 19th Viking Congress proceedings and a Viking longhouse reconstruction project at Kirbuster Farm Museum.
