David Gobel is a Professor of Architectural History at Savannah College of Art and Design, where he has taught since 1996. His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Architecture from Princeton University, an M.Arch.Hist. from the University of Virginia, an M.A. in Architecture from Princeton University, and a B.Arch. from Texas Tech University.
His research focuses on architectural history, urban design, Renaissance architecture, city planning, and commemorative architecture. Gobel's work examines the interplay between cultural identity and built environments, particularly in Southern U.S. and early modern Spanish contexts.
Gobel has received numerous prestigious awards including Fulbright-Hays and NEH grants, along with multiple Presidential Fellowships from SCAD. His professional memberships include the Society of Architectural Historians (where he served as president of the Southeast Chapter) and the Renaissance Society of America.
He has contributed to major publications such as Buildings of Savannah (2016) and Commemoration in America (2013), and has presented at conferences worldwide including the European Association for Urban History and Congress for the New Urbanism.
