David Ginsburg, M.D., is a Research Professor at the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute and holds the James V. Neel Distinguished University Professorship and Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis Professorships in Internal Medicine, Human Genetics, and Pediatrics at the U-M Medical School. His research focuses on the molecular genetics of blood clotting, protein transport mechanisms, and the cellular production of blood-clotting proteins. Ginsburg earned his B.A. from Yale University and his M.D. from Duke University Medical School. He is an HHMI Investigator and has been recognized with numerous awards, including membership in the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.
Research Interests: Ginsburg’s lab investigates the genetic basis of hemostatic disorders, structure-function relationships of clotting proteins (e.g., von Willebrand factor, ADAMTS13), and the regulation of protein secretion pathways. Recent work includes studies on endothelial cell heterogeneity, COPII-mediated transport, and PCSK9 secretion. His team also explores high-throughput mutagenesis and CRISPR-based approaches to identify disease modifiers.
- Key Projects:
- PAI-1 mutational scanning to predict disease impacts
- Endothelial cell transcriptome analysis across vascular beds
- Functional characterization of COPII paralogs (SEC23A/B, SEC24C/D)
Publications highlight breakthroughs like identifying ADAMTS13 as the cause of TTP, uncovering LMAN1/MCFD2 cargo receptor roles, and developing TAK-755 for von Willebrand disease. His lab collaborates widely, leveraging genomic and proteomic tools to advance therapeutic targets.
Awards: HHMI Investigator, National Academy of Sciences member, American Heart Association Basic Research Prize, and over 200 peer-reviewed publications.
Grants and Funding: Ongoing NIH support for projects on SEC23B-related anemias, PCSK9 secretion pathways, and endothelial cell biology.
