Dr. David Gerault is a Lecturer in Cyber Security at the University of Surrey since 2020, affiliated with the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security and Computer Science Research Centre. His research focuses on applying AI techniques (constraint programming, machine learning) to cryptanalysis and ensuring provable security in cryptographic protocols, particularly distance bounding. He co-supervises PhD student Parthi Parthipan and teaches the COMM046 module on Multimedia Security and Digital Forensics.
- Education:
- PhD from Université Clermont Auvergne (France)
- Postdoctoral research at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore)
His research explores intersections between AI and cryptography, with notable work on AES cryptanalysis using constraint programming and security enhancements for distance-bounding protocols. Recent publications address trusted network architectures, mechanised proofs for distance bounding, and vulnerabilities in cryptographic protocols like HB+DB.
Publications span topics such as secure authentication mechanisms, privacy-preserving protocols, and cryptanalysis of symmetric ciphers. His work bridges theoretical cryptography with practical security implementations, emphasizing formal verification and real-world attack mitigation strategies.
Advising focuses on cryptographic protocol analysis, with contributions to trusted network technologies. Active in academic collaborations, his research has implications for securing 6G networks, contactless payments, and IoT devices.
