David Fitzgerald is a Lecturer in International Politics at the School of History, University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, where he also earned his PhD in History. He previously served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Clinton Institute for American Studies, University College Dublin. He directs the online MA in Strategic Studies and contributes significantly to both History and Politics programmes at UCC, with a strong focus on blended and digital learning.

His research centers on U.S. military history, American foreign policy, and the cultural and societal impacts of war. He specializes in counterinsurgency, militarization, and civil-military relations, particularly in the post-Vietnam and post-Cold War eras. His work examines how wars reverberate through American society and how military identity evolves in times of transition.
His major publications include Learning to Forget: US Army Counterinsurgency Doctrine and Practice from Vietnam to Iraq (2013), Obama, US Foreign Policy and the Dilemmas of Intervention (2014), Not Even Past: How the United States Ends Wars (co-edited, 2020), Militarization and the American Century (2022), and Uncertain Warriors: The US Army Between the Cold War and the War on Terror (2023). His articles, published in journals such as the Journal of Military History and Journal of American Studies, explore themes like peacekeeping debates, sexual violence in counterinsurgency, and Gulf War homecomings.

He is actively involved in public engagement, providing expert commentary for RTE, BBC, and The Washington Post, and contributes to the Irish Defence Forces’ UN Training School curriculum.
