David Ryan is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the School of History at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. He holds academic leadership roles as Associate Dean for the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences and previously served as Head of Graduate Studies. He has taught extensively on US foreign policy, American history, and international history, with a focus on post-Vietnam interventions in Central America, Angola, the Middle East, and beyond. His research explores collective memory, transatlantic relations, and the historiography of US foreign policy.
Education: BA (Toronto, 1987), PhD (NUI, 1992). Academic roles include Principal Lecturer at De Montfort University (UK, 1992–2004). He has held editorial roles for journals like Journal of Transatlantic Studies and contributed to numerous international conferences. Notable publications include Obama, US Foreign Policy and the Dilemmas of Intervention (2014) and Frustrated Empire: US Foreign Policy from 9/11 to Iraq (2007).
Research interests span US foreign policy, intervention strategies, and the cultural dimensions of history. He has advised PhD students on topics like US Army counterinsurgency doctrine and Ford-era Angolan policy. His work frequently examines how historical narratives shape policy and memory, particularly regarding Vietnam’s influence on later conflicts.
