David E. V. Rose is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Rose's research focuses on the intersection of several advanced mathematical fields:
- Low-dimensional topology
- Representation theory
- Homological algebra
- Category theory
His current work aims to prove structural results concerning homological and quantum invariants of knots and links, with applications to topology. He is particularly interested in (higher) TQFTs derived from link homology and in link homology theories associated with non type A representation theory. His research has significant implications for understanding the connections between algebraic structures and topological phenomena.
Dr. Rose's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on Khovanov-Rozansky homology, quantum invariants, and categorification. His work often involves collaborations with prominent mathematicians such as H. Queffelec, P. Wedrich, Elijah Bodish, and Ben Elias. His research has been published in top mathematics journals including Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, Advances in Mathematics, and Geometry & Topology.
Dr. Rose has received the prestigious G. de B. Robinson Award in 2024 for his paper "On webs in quantum type C" published in the Canadian Journal of Mathematics, which combines representation theory, category theory, and low-dimensional topology to provide a diagrammatic presentation of the representation category of the quantized enveloping algebra associated to the symplectic group of rank 3.
Dr. Rose actively mentors graduate students, with current PhD students including Logan Gray (working on link homology in type B) and Terence Carey (working on bordered Khovanov invariants). He has successfully supervised multiple PhD graduates including Luke Conners (2025, now at Universitat Zurich), Andrew Adair (2024, now at the Department of Defense), and Logan Tatham (2020, now at the Department of Defense). Luke Conners was recently awarded the 2024 International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) GTA Silver Award.
Dr. Rose teaches a range of courses including Discrete Mathematics (Math 381), Algebraic Topology (Math 776), and specialized topics courses like "Categorification in Algebra and Topology" (Math 891). He also organizes the Topology Seminar at UNC Chapel Hill, which is part of the Triangle Topology Seminar series connecting UNC, Duke, and NC State. Additionally, he has led the Math in Stockholm study abroad program.
