David Dean is a retired Full Professor of History at Carleton University, Canada. He previously held a Lecturer position at Goldsmiths' College, University of London before joining Carleton in 2000. He co-founded Carleton’s Centre for Public History (2002) and remains active in collaborative community projects. His research focuses on public history’s intersection with performance, museums, and digital media. Dean holds a BA and MA from the University of Auckland (New Zealand) and a PhD from Cambridge University (UK).

Dean’s research emphasizes history-telling through theatre, film, and heritage sites. He explores how communities engage with historical narratives through projects like Covid Work Stories and Capital History Kiosks, which earned him the 2025 François Bregha Storytelling Award. His theoretical work includes debates on authenticity in historical representation and the role of public historians as “dramaturges of the past.”
