Jerald Sabin is a Professor at the School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA), Carleton University. His research focuses on Canadian federalism, territorial governance, settler colonialism, and Indigenous political systems. He holds a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2017–2019) and the John McMenemy Prize from the Canadian Political Science Association (2015).
His work examines multilevel political dynamics in Canada, including the interplay between Indigenous sovereignty, territorial administration, and federal policies. Key themes include state formation in northern territories, the impact of religious mobilization in party politics, and the historical legacies of colonial governance. Recent publications analyze the 2022 Ottawa occupation through a federalism lens and investigate First Nation state-building in the Yukon.
SPPA colleagues describe him as a leader in public policy education, innovatively using Slack for active learning in classrooms. He actively engages with media and public discourse on territorial governance and settler-colonial histories, contributing to policy debates on regional autonomy and fiscal management.
- Research Highlights:
- 2025: Reconceptualizing territorial sovereignty in North America
- 2024: Analyzing administrative transitions in NWT/Yukon governance
- 2019: Decolonizing frameworks for First Nation state formation
