David DeMille is a Research Professor at the University of Chicago's Department of Physics, affiliated with the Enrico Fermi Institute, James Franck Institute, and Kadanoff Center. His research focuses on using diatomic molecules as quantum sensors to probe fundamental symmetries in particle and nuclear physics. Key projects include the ACME collaboration (electron EDM search), CeNTREX (nuclear Schiff moment measurements), and ZOMBIES (nuclear anapole moment studies). He develops ultracold polar molecules for precision measurements and quantum technologies.
Research interests span molecular cooling techniques, symmetry-violating interactions, and tabletop experiments probing TeV-scale physics. His group has advanced laser cooling of SrF and TlF molecules to microkelvin temperatures, enabling high-precision EDM searches. Recent work includes improving trapping efficiencies, electrostatic focusing, and cryogenic beam sources.
Funding supports projects like the ACME III EDM search, CeNTREX, and quantum simulations with Yb tweezer arrays. Collaborations include FRIB and international teams.
