David DeMille is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at the William H. Miller III Department of Physics & Astronomy, Johns Hopkins University, within the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. He joined in October 2024 from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physics, particularly precision measurements to probe new fundamental particles and forces using polar molecules. He pioneered techniques for manipulating quantum states of diatomic molecules, enabling ultralow-temperature molecular gas trapping and cooling.
DeMille holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (2024) and recipient of the 2024 Norman F. Ramsey Prize. He has delivered over 250 invited talks globally, including at JHU.
His work bridges foundational physics and quantum science applications, emphasizing symmetry tests and novel measurement methodologies. His lab’s research has significant implications for both fundamental physics and quantum technologies.
