Dr. DeJong's research focuses on technology integration, educational innovation, and simulation-based learning in educational leadership preparation. His work examines how virtual environments and telepresence technologies can enhance leadership development, particularly in rural settings. He investigates the emotional dimensions of leadership decision-making through simulations and explores how technology can bridge geographical barriers in educational administration preparation. His research bridges theory and practice by creating realistic scenarios that prepare future school leaders for complex challenges.
Analysis of Dr. DeJong's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on simulation-based learning for educational leadership development. His work consistently explores how technology, particularly telepresence robots and virtual simulations, can transform educational leadership preparation. The research spans multiple contexts including rural education, teacher preparation, and administrative decision-making. A notable trend is the application of mixed-reality environments like VALE (Virtual Avatar Learning Experience) to create safe spaces for leadership practice and reflection.
Scientific Awards:

Dr. DeJong has chaired numerous doctoral dissertation committees and mentored graduate students in educational leadership programs. His grant portfolio demonstrates significant funding for innovative educational technology initiatives, particularly focused on telepresence robotics and simulation development. These grants have supported the implementation of Double Robotics telepresence systems to enhance accessibility for students who might otherwise face barriers to participation. His work with the Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway Grant shows commitment to creating alternative routes into the teaching profession.
At Dakota State University, Dr. DeJong oversees the implementation of advanced educational technologies including VALE (Virtual Avatar Learning Experience) using TLE TeachLivE mixed-reality teaching environments and Dewey the telepresence robot. These technologies allow teacher candidates to practice classroom management and instructional techniques with computer-generated student avatars before working with real students. The College of Education and Human Performance, under his leadership, incorporates cutting-edge technology throughout its programs, including built-in K-12 technology endorsements across all education degrees.
