David D. Hart is a Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the George J. Mitchell Center at the University of Maine. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis (1979). His research focuses on watershed science and management, examining the role of flowing water in river ecosystems and the impacts of human activities on river health. Collaborating with biomechanics and hydraulic engineering experts, his work spans microflow environments to large-scale restoration projects involving dam operations. He also leads multidisciplinary efforts to enhance watershed management practices, including dam removal and invasive species control.
As Mitchell Center Director, he fosters partnerships between researchers and stakeholders to inform environmental decision-making in Maine and beyond. His research addresses complex issues like riparian restoration and PFAS contamination, emphasizing practical solutions for degraded ecosystems. The Mitchell Center serves as a hub for discussing contentious environmental challenges through forums and collaborative projects.
