Sara Mitchell

Sara Mitchell is a Professor and Director of Geosciences at the College of the Holy Cross. Her work bridges geology, hydrology, and environmental science, with a focus on glacial geomorphology and urban river systems. She holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Washington and has led projects such as analyzing microplastics in the Blackstone River watershed and studying glacial landform evolution.

Her research interests include fluvial processes, sediment transport, and the impacts of human activity on river ecosystems. She has advised numerous students whose work spans microplastic contamination studies, glacial cirque analysis, and environmental consulting applications. Mitchell’s publications explore topics from cirque altitude-climate relationships to beaver dam hydrology in Minnesota.
