David Commanday serves as Visiting Director of Orchestral Activities and Applied Cello in the Music Department at Eastern Illinois University, while concurrently leading the Heartland Festival Orchestra as Artistic Director/Conductor and Youth Music Illinois as Music Director.
His academic foundation includes a cum laude Harvard College degree and a University of Vienna conducting diploma earned with highest honors.
Commanday's professional focus integrates orchestral conducting, cello performance, and music education with specialized expertise in youth orchestra development and community engagement. His international guest conducting portfolio spans major ensembles including the Israel Philharmonic and National Symphony, while chamber music collaborations feature artists like Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- Illinois Professional Conductor of the Year 2011 (Illinois Council of Orchestras)
Throughout his career, Commanday has mentored emerging musicians through leadership roles with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras and Youth Music Illinois, complemented by teaching appointments at Harvard, MIT, Boston University, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
He currently directs the Heartland Festival Orchestra and Youth Music Illinois programs, advancing orchestral training and performance opportunities in Central Illinois.
