David Claxton is an Associate Head at the School of Sport and Physical Activity, College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences. He teaches physiology of sport and exercise on undergraduate and postgraduate Sport and Exercise Science degree courses, while providing leadership on learning, teaching, and quality assurance.
- PhD in Oxygen Uptake Kinetics in Children
- BSc(Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science (2:1) from Liverpool Polytechnic
- PGCLT (Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching)
His research focuses on endurance training and physiological assessment of sport performance, alongside oxygen uptake kinetics and laboratory safety. Clinical collaborations include investigating long-term effects of diaphragmatic hernia repair and walking economy in achondroplasia patients at Sheffield Children's Hospital.
Recent publications highlight work on vertical treadmill biomechanics, retraining interventions for injury prevention, and O2 kinetics in elite athletes. He supervises PhD students, notably A. Jordan, and is a member of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science. Teaching roles span courses such as MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Science and BSc Sport and Exercise Science.
