David Chandler is Professor of International Relations at the University of Westminster, London, UK. He edits the journal Anthropocenes - Human, Inhuman, Posthuman and convenes the Materialisms Reading Group and the Black Anthropocene Working Group. With approximately 30 books (authored and edited), his work spans governing imaginaries of the Anthropocene, digital sensing and mapping, and critiques of liberal and neoliberal paradigms of international intervention including humanitarianism, democracy promotion, human security, peacebuilding, and resilience.
Professor Chandler's research focuses on critical approaches to International Relations in the Anthropocene, with particular interest in Critique after Relation; Futurity and Disavowal; Radical Hope; The Antipolitical Order; Anticipatory Governance; Working with the Negative; Political Ontology; and Abyssal Geography. His scholarship challenges conventional paradigms of international intervention and explores alternative ontological and epistemological approaches to global politics.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent trajectory exploring the intersections of race, coloniality, and the Anthropocene, with increasing emphasis on Black thought and decolonial approaches. Chandler's work moves beyond traditional human/nature divides in International Relations, developing what he terms "abyssal geography" and exploring the "Black Horizon" as conceptual frameworks for understanding contemporary global politics. His scholarship bridges philosophy, critical geography, and international relations theory.
Professor Chandler currently runs two core Masters level modules, 'The Politics of Global Complexity: Rethinking Governance, Power and Agency' and 'Beyond International Relations: Imaginaries of the International, the Global, and the Planetary' in addition to the Westminster (Politics and International Relations) Conversations series. He is affiliated with the Centre for the Study of Democracy and the Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies.
