William M. Chandler is a Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), holding a secondary appointment as Adjunct Professor in the International Relations and Pacific Studies (IRPS) program. He has been affiliated with UCSD since 1997 and previously served as Guest Professor at Tübingen and Oldenburg Universities in Germany. His primary research focuses on comparative political analysis, with emphasis on European federal systems, German and Canadian governance, and European integration. Chandler earned his Ph.D. in Comparative Politics (1971) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, following undergraduate studies at Cornell University.
His academic leadership roles include serving as President of the Conference Group on German Politics (2002–2004), a national association for German studies scholars. He has also held administrative roles, such as Research Director for the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (2001–2003). Chandler’s editorial contributions include advisory roles on German Politics and The Journal of European Integration.
Research interests span federalism, Christian Democracy, immigration policy, and party system evolution, with recent work addressing Europe’s New Populism and U.S. presidential elections. His publications include books like Challenges to Federalism: Policy-Making in Canada and West Germany and over 30 journal articles/chapters analyzing European political dynamics.
Professional activities include keynote addresses on Franco-German relations, conservative party trends, and immigration policy. During 2004, he conducted research on European populism while on sabbatical in Paris.
