David Burmeister

David Burmeister is a Physician Scientist at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), affiliated with the Department of Surgery and the Battlefield Shock and Organ Support (BSOS) group within the School of Medicine. His research focuses on military medicine, translational physiology, and critical care, particularly in burn injury resuscitation, acute kidney injury (AKI), and microbiome interactions. He holds a PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology from Wake Forest University and a Bachelor's in Biology/Pre-Pharmacy from the College of Charleston.

His work spans fluid resuscitation strategies, burn wound healing, and the role of the microbiome in trauma outcomes. Notable projects include developing novel hemostatic matrices and investigating canagliflozin's protective effects against AKI in hemorrhagic shock models. He leads initiatives like the MATES program targeting AKI and extracorporeal systems.
