Ian Stewart is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Nephrology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), concurrently serving as a USAF nephrologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. His external leadership roles include Secretary of the Air Force Chapter of the American College of Physicians, AFMS End User Representative for Joint Program Committee 6, and Ex Officio Member of the NIDDK Advisory Council.
His academic training encompasses:
- Fellowship in Nephrology, University of Texas Health Science (2009-2011)
- Residency in Internal Medicine, San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (2006-2009)
- MD from Keck School of Medicine of USC (2002-2006)
- Bachelor's in Microbiology from University of California San Diego (1997-2001)
Dr. Stewart's research pioneers the intersection of military nephrology and trauma care, focusing on acute kidney injury mechanisms in combat casualties and longitudinal health outcomes in veterans. His work leverages multi-source Department of Defense data to define organ failure risks and develop field-deployable organ support technologies, establishing foundational protocols for combat casualty management.
His 2024-2025 publications reveal accelerating innovation in battlefield nephrology, with emphases on hyperkalemia management, cardiovascular sequelae of trauma, and combat casualty statistics. These works integrate porcine hemorrhagic shock models, veteran epidemiological studies, and novel peritoneal therapies, demonstrating translational impact from bench to battlefield.
His recognition includes:
- Deans Impact Award (2022)
- Donahue Award for Research Excellence (2016)
- James J. Leonard Award for Teaching Medical Students (2008)
- John F. Maher Research Excellence Award (2019)
- Major General Archie Hoffman Award (2012)
As principal investigator for 11 Department of Defense-funded projects, he directs the SPIRIT program investigating sleep-cardiovascular interactions in injured veterans and the MATES initiative developing extracorporeal kidney support systems. His mentorship shapes military medical education through curriculum development and resident training.
He leads integrated research teams across Walter Reed and USUHS, including the Military Acute Kidney Injury Consortium and Combat Casualty Care Metrics Task Force, driving next-generation solutions for organ failure management in austere environments through collaborations with the Joint Trauma System and military treatment facilities.
