Professor David Brown is a renowned historian specializing in modern British history, particularly the 19th century. He holds the position of Professor of Modern History at the University of Southampton since 2012. His research focuses on social reform, philanthropy, Victorian liberalism, British foreign policy, and the role of print media in Victorian politics. He led the Department of Modern History as Head from 2016 to 2018.
Current research includes editing the diaries of the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, supported by a Leverhulme Fellowship (2019–22), and exploring philanthropy's role in shaping civil society. His notable publications include Palmerston: A Biography (2010) and works on Lord Palmerston's diplomatic strategies.
