Dr. David Briscoe is a Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and holds the Casey Lee Ball Chair in Transplantation at Boston Children's Hospital. He leads the Briscoe Lab and serves as Director of the Transplant Research Program, focusing on chronic allograft rejection and transplantation immunology. His research bridges basic science and clinical translation to improve long-term outcomes in pediatric organ transplantation.
- Professor of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School
- Casey Lee Ball Chair in Transplantation, Boston Children's Hospital
- Director, Transplant Research Program
- Principal Investigator, T32 Training Grant (funded through 2025)
- Senior Editor, Transplantation Direct
Dr. Briscoe earned his medical degree at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and completed residency training in General Medicine and Pediatrics in Dublin, followed by Pediatric Residency at the University of Colorado and a postdoctoral fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
His research focuses on the intragraft microenvironment, endothelial-immune interactions, T cell regulation, and biomarker development. He investigates how leukocyte-endothelial crosstalk and signaling pathways like mTOR and chemokines influence chronic rejection. His lab applies discoveries to develop novel therapeutics and transformative care initiatives, particularly in pediatric transplantation.
The 15 most recent publications (2015–2025) reveal a strong emphasis on immune monitoring using microfluidics, chemokine profiling, endothelial immunomodulation, and mTOR signaling. Key themes include subclinical rejection detection, autophagy in post-transplant cancer, and inflammation resolution mechanisms. His work integrates immunology, vascular biology, and translational engineering to advance personalized care.
Among his honors are the Young Investigator Award and Basic Science Investigator Award from the American Society of Transplantation, and election to the American Society of Clinical Investigation.
- Young Investigator Award, American Society of Transplantation
- Basic Science Investigator Award, American Society of Transplantation
- Elected Member, American Society of Clinical Investigation
Dr. Briscoe has been Principal Investigator of an NIH T32 training grant since 2008, mentoring postdoctoral fellows and supporting physician-scientist training. He has also held multiple NIH R01 grants supporting discovery-based research. He serves on NIH study sections and editorial boards, advocating for translational research and education in transplantation science.
He leads the Briscoe Lab, which investigates the molecular basis of chronic rejection, and directs the Transplant Research Program at Boston Children’s Hospital. The program fosters innovation through interdisciplinary research on alloimmune responses, novel signaling pathways, and clinical translation to improve pediatric transplant outcomes.
