David Brechbilder is a Researcher and Lecturer at the Chair of Contemporary History, University of Mannheim since September 2023. He is pursuing a PhD on the founding history of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts as part of the research project 'Between Excellence and Expansion: Southwest German Science Policy from 1978 to the Present'. Since October 2023, he has also been a freelance contributor to the Friedrich Engelhorn Archive in Mannheim.
He studied History and Sociology in Mannheim, previously serving as a research assistant at the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History and University Archives. In 2016, he tutored the 'Mannheim Seventeen and a Half' project at the Chair of Late Middle Ages and Early Modern History. Born in Würzburg, Brechbilder transitioned to academia after training as a masseur and medical bath attendant, obtaining his university entrance qualification through second-chance education at State College Mannheim in 2014.
His research focuses on contemporary German history, Baden-Württemberg regional history, science policy, and the historical development of Mannheim's city and university. No specific grants or awards are noted, though his interdisciplinary background and commitment to historical scholarship are central to his profile.
