Dr. David Bowie is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of the Department of English at the University of Alaska Anchorage. His research focuses on sociolinguistics, dialectology, and the intersection of language with aging and identity. He has held faculty positions at Brigham Young University and the University of Central Florida prior to joining UAA in 2009.

Research Interests: Bowie investigates linguistic variation across Alaskan dialects, the connection between language and aging, and how individuals express social identities through speech. He aims to produce a dialect atlas of English in Alaska, a region under-researched in linguistics. His work bridges quantitative analysis with sociocultural factors.
Labs/Teams: He collaborates with colleagues on projects related to Western American Englishes and dialectological mapping. Teaching responsibilities include courses on dialectology, sociolinguistics, and the history of the English language.
