David Balaam is a Lecturer affiliated with the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Puget Sound. His research focuses on International Political Economy, Security Studies, Food and Hunger, Trade and Finance, and U.S. Foreign Policy. He co-authored the textbook Introduction to International Political Economy (Routledge, 6th edition).
Dr. Balaam has extensive teaching experience, having taught for 31 years at the University of Puget Sound and currently serves as an affiliate of the Jackson School's JSIS program. He has also taught courses in the University of Washington's Political Science department and directed a study abroad program in Rome in 2013, with plans to lead another in 2016. His work bridges theoretical and applied aspects of international relations, emphasizing practical policy implications.
Key achievements include his Fulbright fellowship (2007) and contributions to academic literature through collaborative research and textbook authorship. His expertise spans global political dynamics, with a focus on economic interdependence, security, and regional stability.
