معرفی
Dr. David Baker is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Marquette University, College of Health Sciences. His research focuses on understanding the role of extrasynaptic glutamate release mechanisms, particularly via cystine-glutamate antiporters (system xc-), in neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and cocaine addiction. He employs preclinical models to investigate how cocaine and schizophrenia-like conditions affect glutamate dynamics and develops pharmacological interventions targeting these mechanisms.
His work integrates molecular, neurochemical, and behavioral techniques, collaborating with external laboratories to advance drug development. He co-founded Promentis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., with Dr. John Mantsch, supported by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Mental Health, and others.
Research highlights include demonstrating N-acetylcysteine's efficacy in reducing cocaine relapse in rodents and humans, and elucidating CRF receptor mechanisms in stress-induced drug-seeking behavior. His studies emphasize translational approaches bridging basic science and clinical applications in addiction and mental health.
