Dr. David A. Baker is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Marquette University. He holds a B.S. from Montana State University (1992) and a Ph.D. from Arizona State University (1999), followed by postdoctoral training at the Medical University of South Carolina. His research focuses on extrasynaptic glutamate signaling in neuropsychiatric disorders, particularly addiction and schizophrenia, with an emphasis on developing novel therapeutics through his role as co-founder of Promentis Pharmaceuticals. He has received the Freedman Award from NARSAD and funding from NIDA, NIMH, and the State of Wisconsin.
Dr. Baker teaches courses in pharmacology and oversees the Neuroscience Graduate Program. He advises two doctoral students and serves as course director for BISC 4120 and BIOL 8530. His lab investigates cystine-glutamate antiporter (system xc-) mechanisms and their role in disease pathophysiology, collaborating with external laboratories to advance drug development. He is actively involved in curriculum development for pre-medical, pre-dental, and pre-PA programs and contributes to initiatives like the Integrative Neuroscience Research Center (INRC).
His research portfolio includes over 15 publications on cocaine addiction, schizophrenia, and therapeutic interventions, with a focus on N-acetylcysteine and levo-tetrahydropalmatine as potential treatments. Collaborations span molecular neurochemistry, behavioral pharmacology, and translational medicine, reflecting his dual academic and commercial (Promentis) roles.
