David B. Mengel served as Department Head of Agronomy at Kansas State University from 1998 to 2005. He holds a B.S. in Agricultural Education (Purdue University, 1970), M.S. in Agronomy (Purdue University, 1972), and Ph.D. in Soil Science (North Carolina State University, 1975). Prior to his tenure at K-State, he worked at Louisiana State University (1975–1979) and Purdue University (1979–1998) in roles involving soil fertility, crop production extension, teaching, and research.
During his leadership at K-State, he expanded the Agronomy Farm Ashland Unit, launched the Sorghum Improvement Center and Distance Masters program, and co-founded a canola production and breeding initiative with Oklahoma State University. His research interests focus on soil fertility, nutrient management, crop production systems, and agricultural extension education.
He is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA) and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), and has received prestigious awards including the Wagner Award (2002) and ASA’s Agronomic Achievement Award (1992). He actively contributed to professional organizations like ASA, serving on its Board of Directors and helping establish Division A-9 for Professional Practitioners.
Mengel’s legacy includes advancing collaborative research programs, educational initiatives, and extension services that bridge academic and applied agriculture.
