David B. Lank is an Adjunct Professor and University Research Associate in the Department of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU). His primary affiliations include the Centre for Wildlife Ecology and the Behavioural Ecology Research Group. He holds additional academic roles, including Affiliate Faculty at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and past positions such as Assistant Professor at SFU and Research Associate at Queen's University.
Dr. Lank's research focuses on behavioral ecology, particularly in conservation and evolutionary contexts. Key areas include the mating strategies of shorebirds (e.g., Ruffs), the population biology of species like Western Sandpipers and Marbled Murrelets, and conservation efforts for endangered birds such as the Tuamotu Sandpiper. His work integrates observational and experimental methods, with a strong emphasis on field studies.
His research interests span genetic polymorphisms in mating systems, migratory behavior, and the ecological impacts of predation and habitat fragmentation. He has supervised numerous graduate students and leads collaborative projects on topics like ruff genetics, shorebird migration patterns, and conservation strategies.
Lank has received extensive external funding, including NSERC Discovery Grants and international collaborations. His publications span over four decades, addressing topics from hormonal regulation of behavior to population dynamics of threatened species. He actively contributes to conservation initiatives, including recovery teams for the Marbled Murrelet.
Dr. Lank's academic journey includes a Ph.D. from Cornell University and postdoctoral research at institutions like Ohio State University and the University of North Dakota. He has authored or co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, reflecting his deep engagement with both theoretical and applied aspects of wildlife ecology.
